How Prius Plug-In Hybrid Works
The 2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers surprising performance, attractive design, and smart technology. It combines the benefits of an electric car with the proven reliability of a Toyota hybrid, while guaranteeing an impressive range.
There is nothing complicated about a PHEV. Just like a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), it has both a gas engine and electric motors, and automatically switches between electric-mode only (EV mode), gas-mode only, or a seamless combination of both.
The difference between plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicle? With its larger battery and more powerful motor, a PHEV allows you to travel further in EV-mode alone than a conventional HEV. Like an HEV, the battery recharges through regenerative braking. You can also choose to plug-in to extend your EV driving range.

A large lithium-ion storage battery gives Prius Plug-in Hybrid an impressive electric-only range of up to 72 kilometers between charges, and can be fully recharged in as little as four hours on a Level 2 charger. Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s regenerative braking system converts braking energy into electric energy to help recharge the battery on the go.
When charging is not available, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid will continue to run like an efficient hybrid – with an estimated fuel efficiency of 4.5L/100km in hybrid mode on the SE model.
